General FAQs

How much notice do you need to make my custom cake?

To give me enough time to plan, bake and decorate your beautiful cake I require at least 10 days notice to create a bespoke custom cake.

If you need a cake in a hurry, take a look on my online shop and you might find the perfect thing. If you’re really stuck, feel free to drop me a note and I’ll help if I can, but it’s definitely best to plan ahead.

How much does a custom cake cost?

Every custom cake is designed, planned and costed individually. There is some generally guidance on my Pricing info page, but the final cost of your cake will be determined by the size, the flavour, the decoration and whether you’d like me to deliver your cake. Check out my sizes and prices page for more info.

When should I collect my cake?

I recommend either collecting or having your cake delivered the day of your event if at all possible. If you need to store your cake overnight, you’ll need to find somewhere, flat, cool and dry to store it. During the winter months it’s fine to be kept inside at ‘normal’ room temperature. Just make sure the heat pump isn’t blasting out warm air too close by. In the warmer months, you'll need to find space in the fridge. It all depends on our oh so changeable weather, so please just ask and I’ll let you know what I think on that particular day.

Can you deliver my custom cake?

Yes. I deliver all across the Wellington region. Delivery cost is set by area. $10 for address within 15km of the Cakery, $20 for addresses within 25km of the Cakery, and $30 for addresses within 35km of the Cakery. I offer delivery Thurs-Sat. All deliveries are subject to my availability. Deliveries take place Tuesday-Saturday in the afternoon. If you need your cake delivered in the morning, please contact me before ordering. You can also collect your cake from Plimmerton.

Can I collect my cake from you?

Let’s Eat Cake is at 15b Steyne Avenue, Plimmerton. I'm about a 25 minute drive from the centre of Wellington City, so while you’re out this way to collect your cake, why not grab a coffee from Tide and Track next doorm at Cafe Oranje or Big Salami, or an ice cream from the dairy and have a stroll along the beach looking out to Mana Island and beyond to the South Island. It's worth the drive!

Can I have fondant icing on my cake?

All my cakes are filled and covered with my signature butter icing. Although I do use small amounts for fondant for small decorations, I’m primarily a butter icing caker, so I don’t cover cakes in fondant.

How should I transport my cake?

I want your cake to be as perfect when it arrives at your event as when it leaves my kitchen. Don’t be scared of travelling with cake, but do be mindful of how you drive. Drive smoothly, turn slowly and avoid heavy braking!!

Please check out my Cake Collection Guide for my full advice.

How much cake do I need?

It all depends how big you cut the slices!! Check out my Sizing and pricing page for my recommendations.

How long will my cake last?

If your household is anything like mine, not long! BUT if you do have leftovers, they will need to be stored in an airtight container. You can keep leftovers at room temperature for up to 3 days. You can also freeze leftovers. Again, place in an airtight box. Defrost overnight if possible. Never microwave cake!!!

Can my cake be vegan/gluten free/dairy free etc?

I believe everyone should be able to enjoy cake, so I make cakes that suit all sorts of special dietary requirements. HOWEVER, all my cakes are baked and decorated in the same kitchen, so I cannot guarantee a fully allergen free environment. If you have any questions, please contact me.

Can I change my order after I pay?

In some instances, yes. But admin fees will apply. Check out my Ts&Cs for all the info

Can I buy cake as a surprise gift?

Sending cake as a gift is such a lovely idea. Not much beats seeing the look on someone's face when they get surprise cake. HOWEVER, if you order cake for someone else, it's vital that you tell them 'something' is going to arrive, so they can be home to accept the delivery. I can't leave cakes unattended outside an address. What if it's the wrong house! Or what if the local cat, ants and any number of other creepy crawlies get to it before your friend does :( So in short yes, but please remember cake isn't something you can stuff in the letter box!!

Can I customise the cakes in the online shop?

The options available for the online cakes are as you see in the online shop. I offer cake toppers to add a personal touch and there are lots of options for flavours and colours. Once you start to customise a cake further it becomes a custom cake and will be subject to custom cake pricing.
